Billy Crystal is an American actor, comedian, writer, producer, and director renowned for his expressive style and versatile career spanning film, television, stage, and hosting.[1][2][4] Born William Edward Crystal, he rose to prominence in the 1970s playing Jodie Dallas, one of television's first gay characters, on the ABC sitcom *Soap*. He joined *Saturday Night Live* in 1984, where his Fernando Lamas parody ("You look mahvelous!") became iconic, leading to a comedy album and Billboard hit.[2][4] Crystal's film breakthrough came in the 1980s with memorable roles like Morty the Mime in *This Is Spinal Tap* (1984) and Miracle Max in *The Princess Bride* (1987), followed by starring hits *When Harry Met Sally...* (1989), *City Slickers* (1991) and its 1994 sequel, and *Analyze This* (1999) with Robert De Niro.[1][2] He directed films including *Mr. Saturday Night* (1992), which he also wrote, produced, and starred in, and *Forget Paris* (1995).[1] Crystal hosted the Academy Awards nine times (1990–93, 1997–98, 2000, 2004, 2012), earning five Emmys, and hosted the Grammys three times.[1][3] His stage work includes the Tony-winning one-man show *700 Sundays* (2004) and a 2022 Broadway revival of *Mr. Saturday Night*, earning further Tony nominations.[2][3] Crystal has won six Primetime Emmys, a Tony, the 2007 Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, and received three Grammy and three Golden Globe nominations.[2][3] He directed the Emmy-nominated HBO film *61* (2001) and remains active, with recent accolades for *Mr. Saturday Night* including Grammy and Tony nods as of 2023.[2] Married to Janice with two daughters, he resides in California.[4]
